What is CBC test?

CBC test stands for Complete Blood Count test. It is a simple blood test done to evaluate the overall health and measure the cells that make up your blood. CBC test also measures the chemicals and other substances to determine the overall health of the body.

Why is a CBC test done?

Your physician may order a CBC test in case of following conditions.

  • As a part of routine check up
  • Check for anemia or other disorders
  • To diagnose a medical condition if you experience some symptoms like weakness, fatigue, fever, swelling, bruising or bleeding.
  • To monitor a medical condition and the medical treatment

How is the CBC test performed?

During this test, a lab technician or a phlebotomist will cleanse the skin with an antiseptic and place an elastic band around the upper arm so that the vein swells with blood. He, then injects a needle and draws a sample of blood in a test tube. After the blood is drawn, he covers the injected area with bandage to stop bleeding. The collected blood sample is then sent to the lab for review.

Are there any risks to CBC test?

There is no risk or complication in taking CBC test. You may have a slight pain or bruise in the injected area. But these symptoms go away quickly.

What does the CBC test measure?

CBC test measures the following cells that make up the blood.

  • White Blood Cells

WBCs help to fight the infection. If you have high levels of WBCs, you may have inflammation whereas low levels indicate you are at a risk for infection.

  • Red Blood Cells

RBCs are very important as they deliver oxygen through the body. If the red blood cell count is lower than normal, then you may have anemia.

  • Hemoglobin (Hb)

Hemoglobin is a protein present in the blood which carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body.

  • Hemotocrit (Hct)

Hemotocrit value gives the information about how much blood is comprised of red blood cells. Low score indicates you are lacking iron and high score indicates you are dehydrated or may suffer from another condition.

  • Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)

MCV is the average size of RBCs. When the size is bigger than normal, you may have low vitamin B12 or folate levels. If RBCs are smaller in size, you could have a type of anemia.

  • Platelets

Platelets are very important as they are necessary for blood clotting. CBC test measures the number of platelets in your blood.

It also measures other components like Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW), Reticulocyte count, Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), WBC differential like neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.

Normal Levels of blood cells

The normal levels of blood cells are clearly mentioned below for both men and women.
